Common Sense

Here is the good news and the bad news, working in a business environment is simple and working in a business environment is complex and difficult.

The business environment is all about graphs and charts, budgets and spreadsheets. There are rules, guides, methodologies and templates to use and follow available everywhere these days for all aspects of any business.

Generally speaking these tools usually help focus the work in the business environment and produce consistent, expected, productive results.

But in spite of all of this business related expert advice and guidance available why do projects or work initiatives flounder and sometimes fail miserably?

Does this situation call for a rule or an exception?

When something isn’t working, even after you have tried it 100 times, it might be advantageous to apply some good old-fashioned common sense to the situation at hand.

I know I have heard this a 1000 times, but you do not learn common sense in school. I have worked with some highly educated people who can’t find a door in a room, and I have worked with people with little formal education who made me a better person, work wise and personally.  I’m just saying.

Nothing is hard and fast in life and business. When necessary be open and receptive to compromise and using different methods, if necessary to get to the desired, mutually agreeable end result.

Acceptance that something isn’t working and you need a different approach is the first step. Both parties need to have and agree to that acceptance.

Focus on the desired end result for both parties and discuss your specific needs.

For example: two people wanted the one orange left in the bowl.  Possible solutions were to flip for it or cut it in two or…you get the picture. 

When they decided to discuss their specific needs it turns out that - The first person wanted to make some juice, while the second person wanted some orange peel for a salad zest.

Work with people and be amenable to compromise and they will generally reciprocate.  At least that's my experience.
