NWT Discovery Portal Project

The NWT Discovery Portal is the most comprehensive online source for NWT environmental monitoring knowledge.

As an information repository, the portal is a search and share tool that allows users to both access data and reports as well as contribute by uploading research and monitoring information.

Search - discover geospatial data, documents and metadata
Share - create metadata and upload data and documents
Link - go to other land use data sharing sites and applications

A Source of Knowledge

The NWT Discovery Portal is a repository of environmental information including qualitative and quantitative information, traditional knowledge, baseline studies and monitoring, as well as scientific research. As well, the portal may contain monitoring information generated through land-use planning, project-specific environmental impact assessments, and regulatory processes. The collection of monitoring knowledge is sourced, researched, and contributed by communities, industry proponents, environmental non-government organizations, interveners in regulatory processes, project review processes and government departments and agencies.

Cumulative Impact Monitoring

The NWT Discovery Portal promotes and uses standards for metadata to ensure compatibility and sharing of environmental information. The NWT Discovery Portal is a joint initiative between the Government of Canada and the Government of the Northwest Territories.

The NWT Discovery Portal's comprehensive ability to share environmental observations and data is a cornerstone to the success of the NWT Cumulative Impact Monitoring Program (CIMP). CIMP's goal is to coordinate environmental programs in the Northwest Territories, and provide data collection, management, analytical and reporting frameworks. The program will increase the efficiency and value of monitoring, as well as deliver comprehensive and accessible environmental datasets and report on the state of the environment. The NWT Discovery Portal ensures information is accessible. This helps identify environmental trends and background information needed to plan and assess the impacts of northern development to support informed decision-making.
